Rosena on the Mountain

"Rosena on the Mountain" is certainly one of the more interesting short stories that we have read so far this year. I found that the style and plot of the story make for a very intriguing read. It details the story of a priest and how he is fighting off the urge to commit the sin of pre-marital sex. It definitely has a unique style as Depestre writes this short story with a very imaginative approach which allows him to go into great detail about all of the conflicts thought the story. Something else that was very interesting was Depestre's depiction of Haiti. He describes it as a very lush and rich landscape, but also as a very poor nation. He states, "The worst of fortunes in the Americas was to be born Haitian.". It depicts just how terrible the living conditions were in Haiti, as the author claims that out of any place in the Americas to live Haiti was clearly the worst due to the poverty low quality of life.

In addition, the story was so interesting because it almost frames the housekeeper as the antagonizer of the his moral dilemma. I think that this is probably how things were during the time of the story. Women were seen as almost inferior, and she probably would have been publicly blamed for tempting Alain. This was a common theme for the Caribbean, and women in the other stories we have read have seemed to be almost their own class different from men.

  1. I like how you focused on the author bringing up the good and bad sides of the story. On one side you have a strong love and uncertainty between the boy and Rosena. I believe the author as a whole was trying to make this the happy part of the story. The other side of the story is the about how poor and how bad the living conditions in Haiti really are. I really like the quote you used about how the worst of fortunes in the Americas was to be born in Haiti.

  2. I also thought it was interesting how the author seems to frame her as the antagonist. I think what that really shows us is how perception was different at the time of this making. the way I see it is Alain was given 2 different life choices that led to 2 different life paths and he choose the one that made him thee most happy. I don't believe anyones actions to try to sway him were wrong. I did think it was interesting how ever that the story ended in mutulation of the priest.
